PIT Count for Homelessness Scheduled in Indianapolis

**Annual Homelessness Count Set for Indianapolis on January 22, 2025**

*Indianapolis, January 21, 2025* – The Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP) announced that the city’s annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of individuals experiencing homelessness will take place on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. This federally mandated effort is a one-night census to identify Marion County residents who are sleeping in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or unsheltered locations.

The PIT Count, conducted with the help of Professional Blended Street Outreach (PBSO) and other Indianapolis Continuum of Care (CoC) partners, is an essential step in understanding and addressing homelessness in the community. The data collected during this count helps inform both local and national strategies to combat homelessness, supports funding decisions for vital housing services, and measures progress toward ending homelessness.

Following the process used in 2024, the 2025 PIT Count will feature a single-night count conducted on January 22, followed by a multi-day service center survey. This methodology ensures accurate and consistent comparisons with previous years.

**Community Support for the Count**

The PIT Count is powered by collaboration and community support. Key contributions include:

- Cummins Inc., providing funding for cold-weather gear, food, and blankets for individuals experiencing homelessness.

- The IndyGo Foundation, offering bus passes to improve mobility access for participants.

- Overdose Lifeline, Inc., supplying naloxone kits for volunteer safety.

- Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, donating warm beverages and snacks for volunteers.

These contributions aim to ensure the well-being of both volunteers and individuals experiencing homelessness during this critical count.

**Importance of the PIT Count**

The data collected during the PIT Count is a crucial tool for securing federal resources that support permanent housing solutions and services. Organizers also place emphasis on counting transient populations, including youths and individuals using vehicles as shelters, to capture an accurate picture of homelessness across Indianapolis.
