Indianapolis Revitalizes Neighborhoods with Bold Urban Renewal
The City of Indianapolis has wrapped up a year focused on transforming local spaces to improve neighborhoods. The city undertook several projects, including the demolition of blighted complexes like Towne & Terrace and Roselawn, allowing nearby residents to look forward to future development. On the Far Eastside, the Department of Metropolitan Development is working with community members to decide how to best use the former sites of Towne & Terrace and Oak Tree Apartments, with additional plans in place for the former sites of Central State Hospital and Indiana’s Women’s Prison.
The city also supported its cultural districts through the Indianapolis Cultural Districts Fund. This fund invested in neighborhood projects designed to revitalize community spaces, stimulate the growth of small businesses, attract tourism, and highlight local cultural connections.
In terms of maintaining public spaces, the Department of Business & Neighborhood Services organized neighborhood cleanups and illegal dumping cleanups that removed more than 375 tons of trash during the year. The agency also restored 19 alley segments, as part of an effort to improve neighborhood safety and upkeep by using data to target areas most affected by illegal dumping.
These initiatives will continue in the upcoming year, with further work planned on alleyways, nuisance properties, and the ongoing development of the Marion County Land Use plan.
