The department said that if someone receives a suspicious message, they should not respond and should report it to law enforcement. It advised residents to verify information through reputable sources and official websites before taking any action.

It also urged residents to use official websites for any submissions of payments or personal information, saying scammers may create fake pages that look legitimate. The department said it will never call or email someone to tell them they are facing charges or must pay to avoid arrest.

For online shopping scams, the department said people should be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, fake order-confirmation emails, or messages claiming there is a problem with delivery. It said residents should shop through trusted retailers and avoid clicking links in unsolicited messages.
