One-Third of Marion County Households Struggle Financially
Staff Report /
In Marion County, over one-third of households are facing financial difficulties, according to the 2024 ALICE Report from the Indianapolis Foundation. Specifically, 257,449 households are classified as ALICE, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These households earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but struggle to meet basic living expenses.
The report indicates that rising costs in housing, food, medical care, and transportation are outpacing income levels, making it challenging for families to make ends meet. More than half of Indiana’s ALICE households are finding it difficult to afford essential needs. For families with children, the high cost of childcare is a significant barrier.
The Indianapolis Foundation reports that it is actively working on promoting economic equity and closing the wealth gap by supporting entrepreneurs and initiatives focused on high-wage, in-demand workforces. Further details about their economic equity plan and other initiatives can be accessed through their Equity Imperative Strategic Plan online.
