Honoring Osceola on Indigenous Peoples' Day

Staff Report / ocalalocal.org

The Marion County Public Library System in Ocala, Florida, is celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day by honoring the influential Seminole leader Osceola. A historical photo taken in 1950 shows young visitors standing beside a statue of Osceola located at Silver Springs State Park. The statue remains on display for the public to visit and pay tribute to Osceola's legacy.

Osceola is remembered for his strong and determined words: "When I make up my mind, I act. If I speak, what I say, I will do. If the hail rattles, let the flowers be crushed. The oak of the forest will lift up its head to the sky and the storm, towering and unscathed."

The celebration includes the hashtag #IndigenousPeoplesDay as the community reflects on Osceola's impact and the significance of this day.
